After-meal sugar spikes?

Once I was stuck in a bad traffic 🚘, my stomach was growling, and I only had cream buns🥖 in the car. I ate the buns, thinking it could satisfy me for at least a 1-2 more hours, but it only took around half an hour for me to feel hungry again. And it wasn’t the kind of hunger where I was craving for buns, it was the kind as if I had not eaten anything at all. 😕

.

We’ve mentioned that consuming refined carbs (e.g. white rice, pasta, bread etc…) can cause blood sugar spikes and leave us feeling unsatiated even after we have consumed a lot of it. So is there something we can do about it? The answer is YES! 🤩

.

Studies have found that when you eat a mixed meal 🍲 inclusive of protein, fat and fibre, it may help lower postprandial blood glucose spikes (after-meal high blood sugar levels) compared to eating an unmixed meal with the same amount of carbs. This is because these nutrients can potentially slow down absorption of carbs by delaying the time for food in the stomach to enter the intestines, ultimately delaying sugar from entering the bloodstream 🙌🏻🙌🏻

.

So the next time you eat a refined carb, be sure to include some protein, fat and fibre in your plate as well!

❤️Stay tuned for ideas on how to prepare a mixed meal!
