We’re back with MSG, the additive most beloved yet at the same time despised by many!
MSG consumption has been linked with diseases like obesity, Chinese Restaurant Syndrome a.k.a. MSG-complex Syndrome, neurotoxicity and reproductive abnormalities….
BUT~~~!
Most of these studies used rodents as subjects, and a VERY HIGH dosage of MSG was given than normal human intake levels. Rodent studies can determine safety levels for food additives, but it cannot represent toxicity in humans at the levels consumed in food.
Also, MSG was given directly into the animals’ stomach to observe for harmful health effects. This is not the typical route for food in a human body, remember food has to be digested and metabolised when passing through our digestive tract.
So...do you mean MSG is healthy?
Well, we’re not exactly saying that.
You see, some people do have MSG sensitivity which causes them to experience headaches, numbness and nausea. Some would even experience eczema where they get red and itchy skin rashes. This is real torture for them. Hence this is why MSG needs to be labelled in food products.
Stay tuned to find out how to identify hidden ingredients which contain MSG in part 3!
